Biography

Catherine Powell-Warren is a post-doctoral fellow in art history at Ghent University. In 2021, sheobtained her doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin, which was supported in part by a Kress Institutional Fellowship at the Leiden University Center for the Arts in Society(2019-2021). Her current project (funded by The Research Foundation–Flanders, 2021-2024) isentitled “Hive Mind: Mentoring, Networking, and Collaboration Amongst Early Modern Women Artists in the Low Countries 1670-1735.” This research focuses on the artists in the proximate circle of Rachel Ruysch, including Maria Sibylla Merian. Her doctoral thesis “Agnes Block’s Networks and Botany: Self-Fashioning at the Intersection of Art and Science” is under contract for publication with Amsterdam University Press. She is currently at work on a book on Maria Sibylla Merian for Lund Humphries/Getty Publications.
